The cost depends on where you charge, your tariff and how efficient the car is. There is no single figure that applies to everyone.
The basic sum
Energy cost per mile is the price you pay per kWh divided by the car's miles per kWh. For example, at a price of P pence per kWh and 3.5 miles per kWh, each mile costs about P divided by 3.5 pence. Use your own tariff figures.
Home charging
Home charging is usually the cheapest option, especially on an off-peak EV tariff. Check your supplier's current rates, and remember that charging equipment and installation are a separate cost.
Public charging
Public rates vary widely by network, speed and location. Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers usually cost considerably more per kWh than home electricity. Some sites also charge parking or overstay fees.
Work out your own figure
Our running-cost calculator lets you enter your mileage, tariffs and the share of home charging to compare against your current fuel costs. Results are estimates, not guaranteed savings.
