YOUR FIRST SWITCH
Buying your first electric car.
Start with how you live and drive. The right car follows from that.
1. Know your journeys
Note your weekly mileage and your longest regular trip. Most first-time buyers need less range than they expect for everyday use, but occasional long journeys need a plan.
2. Sort out charging first
Home charging is usually the cheapest and most convenient. Without a driveway, check public and workplace chargers near you, their tariffs and how often they are free when you would use them.
3. Set a sensible budget
Budget for the car plus charging equipment if needed, insurance and running costs. A cheaper car with a smaller battery may suit you better than stretching for range you rarely use.
4. Check the individual car
Battery condition evidence, service and MOT history, charging cables, recalls and any remaining warranty all matter. Test the car charging where practical.
5. Ask for help
If you are unsure, tell us your budget, journeys and charging situation. We will help you understand the options and compromises before you decide.
